Pirates have taken over Rayman's world and imprisoned him and most of his friends. Rayman has escaped from the pirates, but he needs to regain his powers in order to free his friends from the pirates and their boss, the evil Razorbeard. Ly the fairy is the only one who can help him, but she too has been captured by the pirates. To free her, Rayman must battle pirates and disable the machine that has placed her in suspension. The pirates have broken the primordial energy of the world into a thousand pieces called "lums." Rayman needs to recover these lums in order to regain his powers. Also, the red lums contain vital energy that can restore Rayman's health.
Ubisoft’s Rayman franchise took a sharp and perhaps unexpectedly successful turn in last year’s Rayman Raving Rabbids. The one-time platforming hero went the minigame-collection route, and in doing so introduced the world to the most dementedly entertaining bunch of lagomorphs since Bugs Bunny’s heyday. The game was a success both because of its delightfully slapstick sense of humor and its solid use of the Wii’s motion controls for a variety of twisted games. Now, one year later, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 is on store shelves. This is an altogether predictable follow-up. It puts the rabbids in a mixture of familiar and different-feeling minigames that, unfortunately, aren’t quite as engaging as what the first game offered. Likewise, the previous game’s goofy humor isn’t as spot-on here, with gags more inclined to elicit a mild smirk than any hearty laughter. Nevertheless, the increased multiplayer focus makes playing with your friends quite a bit more entertaining here than in the original game, and there are still some moments when the rabbids’ unique brand of collective psychosis shines through.
When Raving Rabbids opens, Rayman is having a picnic with some of his globox pals. Suddenly, the happy picnic is interrupted by a violent rumbling. This turns out to be the tunneling of several rabbids–vacant, buck-toothed bunny creatures that apparently want to take over the world. Rayman and the globoxes are kidnapped, and Rayman is forced to entertain the masses of rabbids by performing in gladiatorial combat. Of course, gladiatorial combat in this case means playing a variety of silly, utterly random minigames for hours on end.
